Overview

Dewey Square Group represented the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in its successful quest to expand mixed martial arts (MMA) operations into Massachusetts, achieving that goal through a strategic government relations and grassroots outreach campaign.

Challenge

UFC was interested in operating in Massachusetts only if the state enacted a statutory and regulatory framework, including licensing of fighters and safety requirements, that would allow for industry growth and high-quality events.

Strategy

DSG helped write and advance detailed, groundbreaking legislation that expanded the existing Boxing Commission to accommodate MMA. To support our efforts, we developed and executed a grassroots strategy that identified and mobilized supporters of both UFC and MMA, who are not usually active on legislative and public policy matters, to contact their legislators.

Results

Our efforts culminated in the passage of MMA legislation and favorable regulations, clearing the way for a series of events at TD Garden in Boston. As of 2023 there have been seven UFC events in the city, including three title cards, with more planned in the future.

“UFC has worked with a variety of lobbyists in over 30 states, but Dewey Square Group was the best.”
